Download Free Copies of Rock (A Short Story) and Grandpa’s Courtship (A Short Story)

Historical fiction is my favorite genre to write.  I find myself becoming engrossed in events from the past, trying to transport myself to a period in time and immerse myself in the day-to-day events of that time.  I read about that time period I want to write about to gauge how people lived, how they acted, how they talked, and how they thought, and when I feel I have a general understanding of that time period, I am able to sit down and create some characters that would have lived during that time to be used in my shorts stories and novels.

My favorite stories I have written about from the past are Slave Auction and Missus Buck.  I studied the slave trade, slave auctions, and the institution of slavery until I felt I was a member of that world.  It was necessary for me to understand that world totally before I could attempt to write about it.  These stories were the most heart-wrenching stories I have ever written.

Other stories I have written about from the past have been drawn from stories my mother told me about her past growing up in the South.  Rock (A Short Story) and Grandpa’s Courtship (A Short Story) are two stories that I hope capture the realism of living in the Deep South.  They speak to me because I am southern born and bred, and growing in the South’s troubled past has provided me with many colorful tales for my writings.
